In the centre of the Town of Anthony – more specifically the town’s commercial and cultural centre, opposite the new market – the project involved the construction of 20 residential units and 4 retail units in place of the former Firmin Gémier theatre.
. In 2003, the town began developing the square and its surroundings, and the new delicate, light-filled covered market opened to the public in 2006, closely followed by the new theatre and cinemas, all of which enhanced this lively neighbourhood. Our operation, its ground floor dedicated to retail activity, was the final piece of the puzzle for the development of the market and sought to revive this completely redesigned existing space. Historically, in European towns, market squares have been the starting point for the development of today’s major metropolises. Helping to revive such a place is an important act.

The project builds up the edges of the square facing the market. On the site of the former theatre, the three levels of the project have long, deep loggia, set like a balcony over the market and its lively urban scenes. The ground floor restores contemporary arcades that will be home to restaurants with varying cuisines. The quality of the produce and local distribution networks are clearly highlighted and will drive this location, which is already known to residents for its pop-up attractions. The building asserts itself through its materiality, in stone, and its minimal, elegant volumes which can be interpreted as a hollowed-out mass, or an architectonic superimposition of solid volumes (separate stone storage rooms) supporting horizontal slabs. Their linearity is emphasised by the projecting edges of the slabs. These strips of stone grow finer at each level, raising the façade up to the sky.
In a context where the public space is so predominant and unique, the generous outdoor spaces and their storage area offer a high quality of use, while a setback protects and guarantees privacy for residents. In terms of the garden, the project boasts abundant outdoor spaces and pathways. The public circulation is both internal (vertical) and external (horizontal), promoting encounters and conversations. The multiple situations work together to create a series of shared spaces. The project showcases the theme of the “promenade”, which conducive to emerging social life and makes this building stand out in a dense town centre. The omnipresent planting forms landscapes at every level and offers a variety of scale and space, including private or shared gardens, allotments, patios, small gardens and terraces. The inner character of the building forms an inhabited landscape that will evolve with the lives of residents, who will be able to truly make it their own.
